Kuma's care needs are:
[YELLOW]Background: Owner surrender on 8/24/26 d/t loss of housing and not getting along with the resident dog in the new household. Given Green dot on intake. Staff were able to handle dog for all intake procedures without issues. First time meeting handler for evaluation on 8/26/26.O: Dog was standing at the front of the kennel with soft face. Easy to leash. Pulled hard down the hallway. Dropped leash in the yard. Dog paced to the gates at each side of the yard. Stress panting throughout outing. Pawed at gates and pushed nose at the gaps between fences and gates. Walked well on leash while in the yard. Did not take treats. Did not follow tossed toys. Dog pulled hard back through the building to the back parking area. Stood tall with pricked ears, huffed and pulled suddenly towards another dog on the other side of the parking lot. Handler made silly noises and continued walking. Dog continued walking and began sniffing the ground. Stood against handlers legs in the yard. Relaxed with pets around head and along back. Walked well on leash back through the building to his kennel. Entered kennel. No issues removing slip leash by hand. Dog pawed at kennel door and whined. Began screaming and crying as handler walked away.A: Difficult to assess as dog is owner/exit searching and stressed. Dog has been handled by Green volunteers in the shelter with no issues handling other than dog is large can pull strongly on leash. Yellow for volunteer handling as dog is large (>80 lbs) and has the potential to pull hard on leash. Dog may be leash reactive to other dogs in the shelter.B B P: Dog can be made available for adoption. Adopters should continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Adopters should be aware that dog may be leash reactive to other dogs. Unknown how this dog may behave around children. Previous owner reported that dog has experience interacting and playing successfully with children (see owner surrender notes), however dog is large, which may make a home with young children less suitable.
