Henrik is a gorgeous Maine Coon boy with a charming personality to match. He is very fond of people, loving, and loyal. He likes being picked up and hugged and you can expect head boops and lots of purring when you do. He still has lots of kitten-ish energy and loves wand toys, catnip, cheerful scratching post action, and throwing his cat toys around. Henrik is good with people, tolerant of gentle cat-savvy dogs, and some other cats. Henrik has spent considerable time in a foster home and in that time, he has displayed some aggressive behavior towards some other cats despite long and slow introductions, while being a good friend and easy-going with others, it’s hard to predict how he will interact with another cat in the house. The foster’s opinion is that cats that tend to be reactive or overly defensive (hissing, snarling, caterwauling, running away) with Henrik become a target of sorts for stalking/bullying/teasing behavior from him. The foster has observed that confident cats that calmly stand their ground (or just ignore his teasing) when Henrik “tests them out” will do better with gaining his respect and potentially ensuring compatibility. Henrik would also do well as a solo cat, preferably with people who are retired or work from home a lot. He forms really strong bonds with people and would be stressed and unhappy in a household where he is left alone a lot. He has been observed to be very good with older children but his interactions with very young children is unknown.
Henrik is clever and can use his huge Maine Coon paws to open unsecured cupboards and even open doors with lever-style handles. He will need his food & treats securely stored, and a secure home where he cannot get outside or push through a screen window.
Because of his pedigree, Henrik has already had major surgery to repair one of his hips (dysplasia) and may be prone to future joint health issues in the other hip or legs. This breed is also prone to heart issues. The adopter should be prepared to make sure Henrik gets regular vet checkups, and the adopter is prepared to provide treatment for possible future heart and/or joint issues and also care for a long-haired cat who will benefit from regular brushing to keep his coat free of mats. If you love and dote on Henrik, he will love you back, velcro-cat style.
Henrik's adoption fee is $125 and includes his neuter, microchip, current vaccinations, and an FIV/FeLV test. Henrik is seeking an indoor only home with adopters who have a history of having kept their pets altered and current on vaccinations and preventative care. Last Hope's adoption process includes a background check, home visit, and a vet history check.
