Meet Kovu, a gorgeous one-year-old rough-coat Chow Chow who could easily be mistaken for an adorable little brown bear. This stunning boy weighs approximately 50 lbs, is neutered, and has a personality that is every bit as endearing as his looks.
Kovu was picked up as a stray after being on the run for at least a week. Shelter staff were hopeful they could reunite him with his family after seeing posts about an identical missing dog in the area. Unfortunately, despite
several attempts to make contact and messages left for the owner, no one has come forward.
Kovu is definitely a unique-looking Chow. His beautiful chocolate-brown coat has gorgeous
sun-kissed highlights across his back
, and his soft eyes and sweet expression are impossible to resist. He takes treats slowly, with an equally gentle muzzle.
But Kovu’s greatest need right now isn’t simply a home that appreciates how handsome he is.
He needs someone who understands that the world can be a frightening place for a dog who hasn’t yet learned that he is safe.
Kovu is intimidated by just about everything. He is incredibly cautious and would much rather quietly walk away than have a confrontation. He has gently bumped noses with a smaller dog and showed no interest in the bunnies or cats he encountered through a glass partition. There has been no indication that he wants trouble with anyone — quite the opposite.
He will need an
experienced, patient owner
willing to give him the time and consistency he needs to come out of his shell. We believe that once Kovu feels secure, he will bond deeply with his person.
He has already begun warming up to the regular staff who bring him in and out of his kennel, learning that these people are there to help him.
Everyone at the veterinary office fell in love with this vulnerable, shy boy. During his examination, Kovu simply
melted onto the table and allowed the staff to do whatever was needed.
We are determined to make sure Kovu’s next chapter is the one he deserves.
Merlin’s Hope is working closely with the shelter to ensure that this special boy does not end up in the wrong hands.
Kovu is looking for someone with
patience, understanding, stability, and a whole lot of love.
In return, we believe he will give his person something very special: the trust and loyalty of a dog who finally knows he is home.
