Meet Hazel
According to Google, “hazel” is a warm, light brown color with golden, yellow, or reddish tones.
That description could not fit this little girl better.
Hazel is approximately 5 years old, weighs just 8 pounds, and, based on our best guess, is an Italian Greyhound/Pug/Chihuahua mix. She has the softest coat, the prettiest reddish-brown coloring, and long little legs that she has already figured out how to use to launch herself onto couches and beds with impressive efficiency.
And once she gets there?
She wants to cuddle.
Hazel was surrendered to Animal Control and arrived understandably frightened and unsure of everything around her. Since coming into foster care, she has settled in beautifully and discovered that laps, blankets, soft beds, and snuggling at bedtime are all very much to her liking.
She enjoys playing with the other small dogs in her foster home and quickly figured out how to use the doggy door. She had a couple of accidents while learning the routine and initially used pee pads, so she may still need an occasional reminder to head outside for potty time while adjusting to a new home.
When Hazel is not curled up in someone’s lap, she is surprisingly active. She loves racing around the yard with her nose glued to the ground like a tiny scent hound who has been assigned an extremely important investigation.
Cats?
Hazel currently finds them fascinating.
She has barked at them and attempted to chase them, although she is improving with correction. The cats, meanwhile, appear largely unimpressed by her efforts.
She has also spent time around young children and did well as long as they were calm and moved slowly. Hazel is a sensitive girl who startles easily with loud noises and quick movements. Her response has been to jump away or retreat rather than snap, so a calmer household where people can give her a moment to process new things would be ideal.
Leash walking is still a work in progress. She is learning, but she definitely did not arrive with a résumé listing “professional walker” among her skills.
What Hazel does have is an enormous amount of sweetness.
She is affectionate, devoted, playful, funny, and happiest when she knows she is safe and loved. Give her a little patience while she adjusts, and she will happily repay you by becoming your lap warmer, blanket companion, bedtime snuggler, and tiny backyard detective.
If you are looking for a sweet little dog who wants nothing more than to love her person and be loved in return, Hazel may be your huckleberry.

Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 5
Umbrella of Hope is an all-volunteer, donation-run, non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals from local shelters, places them in private foster homes, provides them with needed medical care and then finds them new homes.
Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet.
Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service.
We thank Well Pet Vet Clinic for providing most of our veterinary services and give a special thanks to volunteer photographers Tanya, Barbara, Kristy, Christine, Teressa and Natalie.
