re you a survivor who understands rebuilding trust? A quiet soul who doesn't need a dog to greet many visitors? A compassionate empath with a strong desire to assist those most in need? Or someone willing to help a frightened dog learn he's truly safe? Dewey might be looking for you.
In October 2025, Dewey and his brother Huey were abandoned after hours at the Pocahontas County Animal Shelter in Marlinton, WV. Both arrived terrified—Dewey especially carried deep fear. At the vet, an old crushed eye socket injury was discovered, suspected to be from abuse.
For seven months, Dewey lived in a kennel in absolute terror: cowering, pacing, tail tucked. By early 2026, he began declining further. With no other placement available and facing probable euthanasia, I brought Dewey home to foster in early June 2026. The goal was simple: give him as much time as he needed to decompress then evaluate and take it from there.
Everything challenged him at first. A twig snapping on walks spooked him. A sudden movement, sneeze, or cough made him freeze. Even a moved laundry basket registered as a threat.
Despite his fears, Dewey has made great progress:
• He is house-trained (ZERO accidents!)
• He is crate-trained
• He has tolerated vet visits well (including blood draw, nail trims, ear exam, anal gland check)
• He’s an excellent passenger in a vehicle
• He loves sniffing woodlands during walks, and engaging his nose melts away fear
DOGS: Gets along well with other dogs. A confident foster sibling has helped him learn safety through example.
CATS: Has crossed paths with a couple of cats and shown zero interest so likely ok around kitties. (Check out his cow and duck reaction videos!)
KIDS: Still nervous around children (and unfamiliar adults). Has tolerated them but is not ready for daily interaction.
Dewey’s ideal home would be one with:
• No children currently
• A patient couple or individual ready to continue socialization after gaining his trust
• A confident dog companion he can learn from
• Understanding that gaining his trust won’t be without challenges but will be a deeply rewarding, meaningful experience
Dewey is now ready for the next chapter of his healing journey. He deserves a second chance and a loving home of his own. If you are the special person he's been waiting for, contact the Highland County Humane Society in Monterey, VA.
