Meet Hershey! Hershey is an 11-month-old, 20-lb Terrier mix with a huge heart and a very special personality.When Hershey first arrived, he was absolutely terrified. He was so scared of people and it took about a week before he would even let his foster pet him. But with patience, consistency, and a safe environment, Hershey has completely blossomed! He is a different dog from the one who first arrived — so much happier, more confident, and comfortable.Hershey is a total dog’s dog. He absolutely LOVES other dogs and becomes much more confident when he has furry friends around. He will happily follow his dog siblings around all day like they are his best friends, play with them, and settle down beside them. Because other dogs give him so much confidence, a home with another friendly, confident dog is strongly preferred.With his people, Hershey is incredibly sweet once he knows and trusts you. He loves cuddles, scratches, lounging on the couch or bed, playing fetch, and getting treats. He even likes to rest his head on you when you pick him up. He gets excited when his person comes home and has become very attached to the people he trusts.The most important thing to know about Hershey is that he needs time and patience with new people. He is very fearful of strangers and will usually avoid people he doesn't know rather than approach them. He isn't aggressive or a nuisance barker — he simply needs space and the freedom to come out of his shell at his own pace. His adopter will need to understand that earning Hersheys trust may take time. But once he trusts you, he is truly the best boy.Hershey is relatively easy to have around the house. He isn't a big barker, doesn't jump on people, and is generally very calm and easy to handle. He does have a little mischievous streak and likes to steal shoes, and he is still working on his house training. He does well most days but will need a consistent schedule, supervision, and continued reinforcement. He is comfortable in a crate and can sleep there, although he may occasionally whine if he knows his person is nearby because he'd much rather sleep in bed with you.Hershey doesn't require a ton of exercise. A medium amount of activity and around 30 minutes of daily exercise suits him well, followed by plenty of couch time. He loves playing with his dog friends, fetching, getting treats, and curling up somewhere comfortable.Hershey would be happiest with someone who understands shy dogs and is willing to let him build confidence at his own pace. He is looking for a patient person or family who will give him space, consistency, and lots of love — ideally alongside a friendly canine sibling. Hershey has already come such a long way. He went from a terrified little dog who wouldn't let anyone touch him to a happy boy who cuddles, plays, sleeps beside his person, and follows his dog friends everywhere. He just needs someone willing to let him show them who he really is. And once he does, they'll have an incredibly sweet best friend.Dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-serve basis. We strive to find the perfect home for each animal. Applications may take up to 48 hours to process. All CAWS animals are fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated. His adoption fee is $200.
