Did you "hEAR" that Sam is looking for his forever family? His personality is as big as his ears and his feet. He is a sweet, fun, and affectionate guy. He was pulled from a rural Kentucky shelter and his time there was limited. At 24 pounds and 5 months of age, he still has a lot of growing to do. He has long lanky legs and he is beautifully marked. He has unique black and
white speckles, a white tail tip, and a white band across his nose. Everything is new and exciting to Sam. He can be reactive when he first meets new people and dogs. He will bark and raise his hackles, making himself appear big and tough. But after a few seconds, he relaxes and wiggles up to his new friends. He has met several new people outside of his foster home and he has done well with them. He is definitely not a shy puppy and he loves to explore the outdoors. He has not met younger small children. Being a cattle dog puppy, he can be nippy with his sharp puppy teeth and may not yet be suitable for little ones. As he matures and receives more training and guidance, he may be more adapted to being around
little ones later in his life. Sam gets along well with the three other dogs in our household but he can be rough and pushy, especially with the older dogs. His ideal playmate would be a tolerant young to middle aged dog his size or larger that he can be rambunctious with and that will give him safe and appropriate corrections. His play may be too rough for a smaller dog. In typical cattle dog fashion, he will nip at the face and back legs of his playmate. Another canine buddy is not a necessity, but it would help him settle into his new home and it would help tire him out. Sam has not met a cat but he would probably chase them. He likes to chase birds and butterflies, and he
likes to sit and watch our neighbors' goats. He doesn't obsess over anything. He has average puppy energy and mild to moderate energy for his breed. He gets zoomies daily and then naps immediately afterwards! He likes to stay busy but he does have an "off
switch", and he loves to snuggle with his people. He starts his day with a 45 minute brisk walk. He will pick up and mouth rocks, sticks, leaves, mulch, and whatever else may spark his curiosity. So he needs to be watched, like every puppy his age. He loves chewing on bones, using his lick mat, rolling around his treat ball, tossing his Kong toy around, and knocking over his Kong Wobbler. He loves to engage with interactive toys. He also loves playing with ice cubes! He knows how to sit and shake hands and will soon know how to lay down. He is learning to wait patiently in different scenarios. He picks up training quickly. Leash training is a
work in progress. Potty training and crate training are going well. He is most comfortable in a large or extra large crate. He has never used the potty in his crate. He has been exposed to and desensitized to
noisy periods of time. He is not the kind of guy that wants to sit in a crate all day while his family is
away at work. Sam's ideal home would have a large secure fenced yard with another playful dog (another dog is not a requirement but ideal). He needs a pack leader that will continue to train him and have patience with him as he learns. He needs a family or individual willing to put in time to exercise and stimulate him mentally and physically. Doggie daycare or a pet sitter stopping by would be great options if you are gone for long periods of time during the day, at least while he is still a
puppy. He is up to date on his vaccinations, on monthly heartworm preventative, on flea/tick preventative, microchipped, and has a new beautiful blue martingale collar. Foster mom will supply some of his favorite toys and a bag of food to get him started in his new
home.
