FIV is a cat-only virus, and cannot be transmissible to humans or other species of animals. FIV is not spread casually – like in litter boxes, food and water bowls, or when snuggling and playing. FIV is spread through serious, penetrating bite wounds -- The type of bite wound that is seen most often in feral, intact tomcats -- or by blood transfusions. FIV+ cats can live in a household with other non-FIV+ cats if they are all non-aggressive. Cats with FIV can live very long, perfectly comfortable lives.
